Notes: 2026 Hyundai Venue

A surprisingly fun compact crossover.

From the first time I saw a Hyundai Venue on the road, I’ve had a kind of inexplicable soft spot for them. I think it’s the playful styling at the rear, but more than any baja’d sports car it looks like something that could, with enough carbon fiber and Docol R8 tubing, be reconstituted into a stage rally car. To be clear, it’s not that now, but it is surprisingly fun to drive, in a way.

It’s not remotely fast. It doesn’t really handle and it feels kind of oversprung most of the time. But I spent a week willing it around the back roads of Leelanau County and it was the most fun I’ve had driving in a while. You want to right-foot–brake into some oversteer on a dirt road? You got it buddy. You want to (sort of) control what gear you’re in with the little plus/minus thing on the shift lever? Go for it (sort of). You can get the body rolling in a way you can actually feel, it’s all classic slow car fast stuff, nothing that I’d say Hyundai even did on purpose but overall the venue feels like it’s got more personality that a lot of compact crossovers. It’s too stupid to even say, but with a manual transmission the Venue would be a lot of fun. With a little tidier suspension tune, you’d have something. (Just categorically not something that anyone is asking for.)

It works for what it’s designed for, too. It’s got plenty of room inside, it’s comfortable. Things are where you expect them to be and more or less work. It’s dumb, but I do appreciate stuff like the body-colored bezels on the A/C vents. There should be an option to silence the little chime that tells you to take a break/drink some coffee; it’s out of character in a car that’s appealing because it’s not trying to do too much. I

It’s one of those cars that gets by on personality and being generally pleasant despite being inexpensive. A lot of automakers would try to do too much with a car like this, but Hyundai seems to have really focused on making it useful and pleasurable to operate while mostly minimizing annoyances. If you go really crazy with options, you’ll still be under $25k, which feels like a deal. Speaking of deals, the 2027 Venue has been fully redesigned to fit Hyundai’s new, more butch styling philosophy so you may be able to find a a dealer who is willing to give you a break on a 2026.

I was having this conversation with a different, former Jalop: why is there no, budget, Maccan competitor? Like all the German, lux brands have fast, lited hatches but the Asians and Americans just decided “nah,” except the Kona N.

I will die on the hill that the compact CUV is the best vehicle for the most people the most time; but it would be nice if sporty ones didn’t start at more than most people’s annual income.
