Alex KiersteinForget about the subtle parallels. Result Japan gives the GR86 a complete AE86 facelift, from pop-ups to panda stripes.
There are a lot of things that are surprising to me about the Toyota GR86 and its Subaru BRZ twin. One is that they were produced at all; Subaru was reluctant about participating initially. For a collaboration like this to span into two full generations without a partner dropping out is also remarkable.
But what’s really surprising is that as far as I can tell, no one has done a fascia conversion to make the 86 look more like its famous AE86 ancestor. Until Result Japan got the itch, that is.
Result is bringing the Neo86, as it’s calling the kit, to the Tokyo Auto Salon, which starts in a few days. It’ll be taking deposits, too—this isn’t a one-off for the show.
It’s intended to be a globally available kit, although conspicuously the price has yet to be revealed. Given the extensive reworking of the first-generation 86’s front end—everything ahead of the A-pillars seems to have been replaced or heavily altered—it can’t be cheap. It doesn’t need to be, though.

I’m sure it’ll repel some of you. The final surprise, for me, is how it’s growing on me. Especially if you look at it outside of the context of either the 86 or the AE86. Just look at the shape, and the pop-ups. There’s a bit of an S13 Nissan 180SX feel to it. The 86 is clearly a lot curvier than the wedgy AE86, but plenty of pop-up-equipped cars were curvy.
I really want to see a ST205 Celica GT-Four front end on the first-gen 86 shape. That would be absolutely incredible with a brace of rally lights and a Castrol-inspired paint job. Based on what Result did with this AE86-inspired front end, I think they could make it look damn good.
